When you say "people" you don't think of the entire world population, you think of those you know (or know of) some people don't even think of humanity as people... but that is straying off topic. When you read this page your instant thought was of your "evangelical Christians," but do you think that everyone thought the same thing?
"people" is a broad term...
"Religious people" narrows that term by a lot.
